Continuing Education Highlights: Summer 2025

|
Continuing Education, News

Looking to level up without the time commitment of a two-year degree? Continuing Education programs (sometimes shortened to “Con Ed” or “CE”) are designed for working adults seeking to advance their career, gain new skills, or simply explore something new. Where a longer degree/diploma program includes more general education classes, Con Ed courses focus specifically on practical training—equipping you for a new career in a matter of months or even weeks!

Keep reading to learn about some of the new and noteworthy Continuing Education programs happening at Vance-Granville in summer 2025. For more information about a specific program, please contact the representative listed on the program page. Note that class schedules are subject to change.

Basic Law Enforcement Training

Launch a career that makes a real difference in your community! Vance-Granville’s Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Academy prepares students for entry-level employment as a law enforcement officer with state, county, or municipal governments. Our accredited, hands-on program introduces cadets to the handling of firearms, driving a police vehicle, and a stringent physical training regimen, as well as foundational classroom instruction.

BLET Academy 121 begins at VGCC on Monday, July 7, and runs through December 2025. Pre-orientation is scheduled for Friday, June 27. Capacity is limited, and applicants must meet the minimum admission requirements to be considered.

To learn more or start your application, contact BLET/LET Director Brandon Bishop at (252) 738-3263 or [email protected].

CDL-B Truck Driver Training

Starting in summer 2025, the VGCC Truck Driver Training program will provide students with even more flexibility to choose a course that fits their trucking career goals. The College is proud to announce its new 5-week CDL-B training option, joining the 9-week CDL-A course it already offers.

The primary difference between a Class A and a Class B CDL (commercial driver’s license) is the type and weight of commercial vehicles each license covers. For drivers who don’t intend to do long-haul trucking, choosing a CDL-B license instead of CDL-A can mean faster course completion and a more regular work schedule in their future careers, while providing foundational skills to pursue the CDL-A later on.

VGCC plans to fully launch CDL-B training at its Henderson campus this August. To learn more, visit the program page or contact CDL Coordinator Kelvin Sharpe at (252) 738-3408 or [email protected].

Drone Aviation

VGCC is excited to introduce an all-new class to its Aviation program: UAV Aerial Imaging. This advanced course is for those who have already mastered basic flying of UAVs, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles or drones. Learn how to capture digital photos/videos using drone technology as well as the fundamental editing skills that will make your work shine. This class will meet for two Saturdays at VGCC’s Main Campus starting July 19.

The College will also offer FAA Part 107 Exam Prep this August for those looking to become federally-licensed commercial drone pilots. Need to build your drone pilot skills before taking either of these classes? Sign up for UAV Pilot Training at Vance-Granville Community College this June.

For more information, contact Dean Kyle Burwell at (252) 738-3521 or [email protected].
