Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! This year's national Black History Month theme "African Americans and Labor" focuses on the rich cultural contributions made by Black workers of all backgrounds. Check VGCC's social media pages again next week to learn about another historical figure whose legacy impacts all of us! π·πΎπΌπ§πΎβπΎπ
North Carolina-native John W. Mitchell (1886β1955) played a pivotal role in supporting rural farms and farm workers. After graduating from what later became NC A&T University, he became a pioneering leader in the stateβs Cooperative Extension Service and was eventually appointed by the United States Extension Service to represent a 17-state region. Mitchell taught agricultural and financial innovations that helped farmers thrive. In an era still marked by segregation, he also helped establish one of the nationβs largest Black 4-H Clubs, empowering the next generation of workers with valuable skills.

Vance-Granville Community College invites you to an upcoming screening of the award-winning documentary Our Movement Starts Here. π¬ποΈ When a rural Warren County community fought the stateβs plan to build a toxic landfill in their county in the 1980s, they sparked one of the first cases of environmental justice in the United Statesβa courageous movement that brought civil rights activists and environmentalists together in solidarity. πβ This film not only revisits the historic battle, but it also brings the voices of the original protesters into the present to confront the injustices still faced by marginalized communities today.
π Monday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.)
π Vance-Granville Civic Center in Henderson
π¬ Event includes an in-person Q&A with Warren County protesters featured in the film as well as filmmaker John Rash
