Institutional Governance

Section 1.L.1 – Governance

Vance-Granville Community College operates within the statutes, policies, and regulations set forth by the State of North Carolina, the State Board of Community Colleges, the Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees and the Federal Government.

  1. Vance-Granville Community College shall operate under the direction of a board of trustees, a corporate body, which derives its authority from the law and rules of the State Board.
  2. The President, as Chief Executive Officer, is charged with the delegation of authority to other employees of the College. The President is granted the right of review and approval over all internal grievances and management decisions. In the absence of a policy, the President’s decision will prevail until an orderly means can be found to develop and implement appropriate policy.
  3. College standing committees focus on major operations and have a stated advisory capacity or purpose that supports the College Strategic Plan. Each standing committee has a definitive area of responsibility, prepares informational reports/proposals, and provides advice and recommendations as appropriate.

Section 1.L.2 – Accreditation

Vance-Granville Community College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award associate degrees. The Commission on Colleges should be contacted only if there is evidence that appears to support an institution’s significant non-compliance with a requirement or standard.

Section 1.L.4 – Membership

Vance-Granville Community College is a member of the following:

  • American Association of Community Colleges
  • North Carolina Community College System
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges

Section 1.L.5 – Policy Development & Revision

Although only the trustees can establish policies by which the College is governed, any College employee or group of employees may submit to the President, through the appropriate Vice President, a document requesting a new policy or the revision of an existing policy. The document must include:

  • The policy being addressed
  • The action requested
  • The rationale for the requested action
  • The draft of the new or revised policy

All recommended polices must be approved by the President before being presented to the Board of Trustees for action.
