Tickets for VGCC Drama’s ‘Proof’ on sale April 8

Nine students of different races and genders sit in two staggered rows in a theater.

The cast and crew of VGCC Drama’s May 2024 production of ‘Proof.’ Front row, left to right: Andrew Arnott, Saylor Gray, JayAnn Gupton, and KB Wiggs. Back row: Chania Miller, Micah Jones, Riley Stone, Aidan Bowen, and Morgan Burnett.

When student actors return to the stage at Vance-Granville Community College next month, it will be a moment four years in the making.

VGCC Drama proudly presents its production of David Auburn’s “Proof,” winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. In the story, the twenty-something daughter of an esteemed mathematician has just laid her father to rest. In the days that follow, she must deal with her own volatile emotions, the arrival of her estranged sister, and the attentions of her father’s former student. The discovery of a mysterious notebook draws her into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit?

The all-student cast and crew come from across the College’s service area: Micah Jones of Franklinton as Robert, Saylor Gray of Bullock as Catherine, JayAnn Gupton of Henderson as Claire, Andrew Arnott of Oxford as Hal, Aidan Bowen of Stovall on props and makeup, Morgan Burnett of Henderson on sound, Chania Miller of Henderson on lighting, KB Wiggs of Henderson as stage manager, and Riley Stone of Bullock as assistant stage manager. The students have worked under the direction of VGCC’s Department Chair of Fine Arts & Humanities, Betsy Henderson.

Months of hard work will culminate in four shows:

  • Thursday, May 2, at 8 p.m.
  • Friday, May 3, at 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 4, at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m.

Following the opening night performance, VGCC math instructors Erin Folz and April Rossi and Cathy Davis, Coordinator of Counseling, Accessibility, & Support Services at the College, will lead a discussion on the themes of Women in Mathematics and Mental Health.

All shows will take place in the newly-renovated Small Auditorium on VGCC’s Henderson Main Campus , located on the lower level of Building 2 (Room #2105) and accessible from the campus’s central courtyard.

Tickets for “Proof” go on sale Monday, April 8; the cost is $20 General Admission, $15 for Seniors/Military, and $10 for Students and VGCC Faculty/Staff. Tickets may be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com/e/proof-tickets-869313579317 .
