Vance-Granville Community College invites you to an upcoming screening of the award-winning documentary Our Movement Starts Here. 🎬🎞️ When a rural Warren County community fought the state’s plan to build a toxic landfill in their county in the 1980s, they sparked one of the first cases of environmental justice in the United States—a courageous movement that brought civil rights activists and environmentalists together in solidarity. 🌍✊ This film not only revisits the historic battle, but it also brings the voices of the original protesters into the present to confront the injustices still faced by marginalized communities today.
📆 Monday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m. (doors open at 5 p.m.)
📍 Vance-Granville Civic Center in Henderson
💬 Event includes an in-person Q&A with Warren County protesters featured in the film as well as filmmaker John Rash

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! This year's national Black History Month theme "African Americans and Labor" focuses on the rich cultural contributions made by Black workers of all backgrounds—free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary. Each week this February, we'll feature another historical figure whose legacy impacts all of us! 👷🏾💼🧑🏾🌾🏭
Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) wasn’t just the first Black woman in the US elected to Congress and the nation’s first Black major-party presidential nominee; she was also a fierce advocate for workers’ rights. As a former educator raised by working-class parents and grandparents during the Great Depression, Chisholm understood the power of fair wages and strong labor protections. In Congress, she fought for minimum wage increases, unemployment benefits, and domestic workers' rights, often standing up for those ignored by traditional labor laws.
