VGCC launches Online Registration for Continuing Education

Vance-Granville Community College recently introduced a new system that allows area adults to register and pay for many continuing education classes online.

According to Dale Fey, the college’s Dean of Continuing Education , the innovative changes bring several benefits. “First of all, this is going to be convenient for our students, who will now be able to register from anywhere, anytime, at the click of a mouse,” Fey said. “In addition, this will mean that all the administrative procedures will be taken care of before the class meets, so that all of the class time can be used for instruction and teachers can focus on what they do best, which is teaching.”

The new online registration system has gone into effect for Occupational Extension , Occupational Healthcare Programs (Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, and Phlebotomy), and Personal Enrichment classes.

Other Continuing Education departments may be added to the system in the future. Schedules for all Continuing Education courses are online (see http://www.vgcc.edu/Schedules/schedules.cfm  for links to all schedules). On the schedules for Occupational Extension , Occupational Healthcare  and Personal Enrichment , a “Register” button is provided for each class, which launches the registration process. Students will receive an e-mail directing them to a link for payment. At this site, students have an option to pay by credit card through a secure site. Fey encourages all community members to visit the VGCC website ( www.vgcc.edu ) frequently to check these schedules, because new classes are being added throughout the year. “We have the flexibility to organize classes at practically any time, as the needs of our community and our employers change,” he said.

While VGCC officials encourage online registration, Fey noted that it is not mandatory. “Students can still register and pay for their classes in person at any VGCC campus at certain times during the week, as long as they register by the set deadline,” he said. Even when registering in person, the streamlined process will be computer-based and rarely involve paper, in line with the college’s emphasis on sustainability. Meanwhile, the recent addition of registration deadlines helps provide all teachers and students with ample notice if a particular class is cancelled and/or rescheduled.

“This change is necessary to enhance the ‘one college’ experience, since students already register for curriculum programs at the college online,” Fey said. “It’s a significant transition, and we appreciate the patience of our community as we implement these new procedures.”
