Businessman advises VGCC Students

An area native who has done business around the world recently offered advice to Vance-Granville Community College students as a guest speaker for two classes. Roger Taylor, Jr. grew up in Warren County and attended Warren County Schools before studying accounting at Greensboro College and embarking on a business career. Today, Taylor owns two businesses, is a real estate agent and chairs a non-profit organization that he founded, the National Council for Family Advancement. Based in Washington, D.C., he also travels the globe as an information technology consultant for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a specialized agency of the United Nations system set up to help promote the health of the world economy.

On Dec. 1, Taylor talked with VGCC students in a Business Communication course, which also served as a leadership development activity for the college chapter of the Phi Beta Lambda business student organization. Later that day, he spoke to a Professional Development class that included mostly Pharmacy Technology students .

Taylor discussed setting career goals and making plans to reach those goals. He also touched on managing money and investing. “Many people think that they don’t have the money to invest, but they need to remember that they can invest in their children’s education, as well as their own,” Taylor said. Having traveled to many countries, Taylor urged students to take advantage of the educational opportunities in the United States, which are not available in other countries. He encouraged students to “seek your dreams, and if you keep your end goal in mind, you’ll be successful, no matter what stresses and hardships you have to overcome.”

Taylor came to the attention of VGCC Business Administration instructor LaTonya Steele because of his VGCC connection. His mother, Thelma Taylor, is a VGCC industrial sewing instructor.

At VGCC, Business Administration students are provided a fundamental knowledge of business functions, processes and organizations in today’s global economy. For more information on the Business Administration program, contact Carl Hann at (252) 738-3295.
