September 15–21, 2024, is National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week! Adult Education helps build expertise in reading, writing, speaking English, and doing math, but that’s just the start. Adult Education is also developing digital skills, studying to become a citizen, or gaining job/career skills. It’s learning about health, money management, and how to support children’s learning.
At Vance-Granville Community College, our College & Career Readiness department approaches Adult Education in four ways: through our Adult Basic Education program, our Adult High School program, our HSE (High School Equivalency) program, and through our ESL (English as a Second Language) program. In these programs, students build proficiency in five major components: reading, writing, social studies, science, and math. Within these courses, students also gain skills toward digital literacy and money management.
VGCC College & Career Readiness also encourages students to pursue one of our Integrated Education & Training (IET) programs, where they can acquire a trade while also completing their high school education. Upon completion, students are prepared to take official High School Equivalency tests and/or enter the workforce in the field of their choosing.
Vance-Granville Community College is proud to empower adult learners in our community to achieve their highest potential. If you are one of millions of American adults hoping to build basic skills or complete their high school education, we’re here to help at little or no cost to you!
