VGCC Women’s Volleyball team starts season

The 2014 Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball season is underway.

The Vanguards began their season on Sept. 6 with a non-conference tri-match hosted by Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City. VGCC lost both to the host team and to the squad from another four-year school, Christendom College.

Conference play began on Sept. 11, when VGCC hosted Central Carolina Community College at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. The result was a victory for the Cougars from CCCC, three sets to none (with scores of 25-10, 25-20 and 25-17). Leading contributors for the Vanguards in that match included Kara Reese of Henderson, who had 11 kills, four blocks, two digs, eight service points; Caitlyn Robins of Creedmoor, with three kills, one block, two digs, 13 service points; and Rachel Thomas of Louisburg, who notched eight kills, two blocks, three digs and six service points. Coach Christopher Young described Robins as “the court leader” while also applauding the defensive play of Avery Allen of Henderson, who made ten digs and seven service points. “The ladies played with a lot of poise and fought hard after losing the first match 25-10,” Young noted. “They came back and competed closely with CCCC in the next two matches, staying within a few points the entire game.”

On Sept. 13, VGCC traveled to Wytheville (Va.) Community College, another conference rival, for a double-header. In the opening match, the WCC Wildcats won in three sets (25-18, 25-16 and 25-18). The second match was also a three-set victory for the home team (25-15, 25-23 and 25-19). Over both matches, Kara Reese totaled 17 kills, four service aces, 22 digs, and 12 blocks. Caitlyn Robins had six kills, five service aces, 12 digs, and three blocks. Rachel Thomas made a total of eight kills, two service aces, 19 digs, and four blocks.

The remaining home matches for VGCC are Sept. 25 at 5 p.m. versus Sandhills Community College (a double-header), and Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. versus Davidson County Community College. For more information on volleyball, visit the VGCC athletics website ( vgcc.edu/athletics ).
