VGCC Women’s Volleyball team opens new season

The 2012 Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball season is underway. The Vanguards began their season on Sept. 1 with a tri-match hosted by Johnston Community College. In the first match, the Sandhills Community College Flyers defeated the VGCC squad, three sets to none. To finish the tri-match, VGCC played the host team, again losing to the Jaguars in three sets. Key contributors for the Vanguards at the tri-match included Veronica Papandrea (3 assists, 2 kills), Brittny Shells (1 assist, 1 kill, 1 block), and Rebecca May (2 digs, 2 kills).

VGCC’s next match was another road contest, this time at Davidson County CC in Lexington on Sept. 5. The result was another three-set loss for the Vanguards. Papandrea led her team with 2 digs and an assist.

VGCC, Sandhills CC, Johnston CC and Davidson County CC all compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division III for women’s volleyball.

The Vanguards will play their first matches at home when they host a tri-match at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson on Saturday, Sept. 22. At Noon, VGCC plays Johnston CC. Next, Johnston CC takes on Rockingham Community College at approximately 2 p.m. Finally, VGCC and Rockingham CC complete the tri-match starting at approximately 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
