VGCC Women’s Volleyball team falls in season’s first home matches

The Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball team hosted its first matches at home on Sept. 22. VGCC welcomed teams from Johnston Community College and Rockingham Community College to the tri-match at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson.

 

In the first match of the day, the Jaguars of Johnston CC defeated the Vanguards, three sets to none (with scores of 25-8, 25-16 and 25-11). To finish the tri-match, VGCC lost to the Rockingham CC Eagles squad in three sets (25-16, 25-11 and 25-14). Key contributors for the Vanguards at this tri-match included Cynthia Kelly of Oxford, who posted 21 digs, 4 assists and 5 kills over the two matches; Veronica Papandrea of Durham, who added 1 service ace, 6 digs, 6 assists and 1 kill; and Brittny Shells of Oxford, with 6 digs, 1 assist and 5 kills.

 

Earlier, on Sept. 8, VGCC lost to the Eagles and to the Virginia Western Community College Blue Stars at a tri-match in Wentworth. Scores in the Rockingham CC match were 25-8, 25-9 and 25-13; in the Vanguards’ first-ever face-off with Virginia Western CC, scores were 25-15, 25-13 and 25-6. Cynthia Kelly of Oxford led the Vanguards statistically with 5 digs, 6 assists, 5 kills, 1 block and 1 service ace during the tri-match. Veronica Papandrea of Durham contributed 2 service aces, 4 digs, 4 assists and 4 kills. Kim Nelson of Henderson added 5 digs and a service ace.
