VGCC Women’s Volleyball team 1-3 in early matches

The 2011 Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball season is underway, and the team has notched its first victory of the year.

The season began with two losses, however. On Aug. 26, area rival Louisburg College beat the Vanguards in three sets, with scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-7. VGCC’s first home match, scheduled for Aug. 27, was postponed due to weather, so the Vanguards’ home opener at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson became the Aug. 30 match versus the Bulldogs from Pitt Community College. VGCC also lost this match in three sets, 25-7, 25-16 and 25-3.

Next, on Sept. 2, the Vanguards hosted Wilkes Community College at Aycock, where they dominated the Cougars in a 3-0 victory, with scores of 25-8, 25-5 and 25-3. It was the first win for VGCC under the new head coach, Heather Chance. The coach said that her squad’s outstanding player for that match was Morgan Adcock. “Not only did she serve 21 straight points in the third game, but she also had four kills, one block, one assist and ten aces,” Chance said of Adcock. Other key contributors for the Vanguards included Taylor Murry (10 assists, 4 aces), Katelyn Moore (10 aces), Chelsea Clayton (8 aces, 5 kills), Natalie Reavis (5 assists, 4 aces, 2 kills, 2 digs) and Kaylin Owen (6 kills, 4 assists, 1 ace).

The next day, Sept. 3, VGCC traveled to Cape Fear Community College and lost to the Sea Devils three sets to none, with scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-12. Statistical leaders for the Vanguards included: Taylor Murry, with 5 assists; Katelyn Moore and Kaylin Owen, with 6 digs each; Chelsea Clayton, with 5 kills; and Morgan Adcock, with 2 aces.

VGCC, Louisburg, Pitt CC, Wilkes CC, and Cape Fear CC all compete in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division II.
