VGCC Warren Campus offers Private Protective Services training

Vance-Granville Community College’s Warren County Campus will soon offer training for area residents who want to serve as security officers in the private sector. The “North Carolina Private Protective Services” course is scheduled to be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 until 9 p.m., Sept. 10 through Oct. 3, in Building 4 on the campus, located at 210 West Ridgeway Street in Warrenton. This is the only location at which VGCC will be offering the course.

The Private Protective Services training course is designed to prepare security guards who protect private property and maintain safety in a variety of settings. Both full-time and part-time jobs are available in gated communities, businesses, manufacturing facilities, health care institutions, shopping malls and at special events. This course will cover topics such as legal issues for security officers, emergency response, communications, patrol procedures, note taking/report writing and deportment.

Nancy Oberman will serve as instructor for the course. Certified as an instructor by the N.C. Private Protective Services Board, Oberman has 30 years of professional experience in law enforcement and the federal corrections system.

In North Carolina, security guards (whether armed or unarmed) are required to be licensed, and applicants for security guard certification must undergo training to obtain such a license. Unarmed guards must complete a minimum of 16 hours of training. Armed guards must complete a state-approved firearms training course as well. Armed security guards must pass an examination prior to gaining state certification, but the state has no examination requirement for unarmed security guards. North Carolina requires applicants for both armed and unarmed certification to meet certain general eligibility requirements for credentialing. Only U.S. citizens or legal resident aliens, ages 18 years or older, qualify for security guard certification in the state. Applicants must demonstrate moral character by having no previous felony convictions.
