VGCC Vanguards record first victory of basketball season

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards only needed two games to find their first win of the 2014-15 basketball season, with an overwhelming 98-62 road victory over the junior varsity squad from St. Andrews University on Nov. 3. That brought VGCC’s record to 1-1 to start the team’s second season under head coach Michael Woody.

The Vanguards opened the regular season at home on Nov. 1, by hosting the Storm from Tidewater Community College of Virginia. Although VGCC led 37-33 at the half, the visitors came back to win, 79-75. The Vanguards were led by freshman Antonio Murphy of Fayetteville, who had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Jarrett Ballard of Henderson had the most steals (ten) and was second in scoring, with 15 points. Freshman Tyrek Beverly of Oxford contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

In VGCC’s non-conference win at Laurinburg, Beverly was the leading scorer, with 14 points. He was one of five Vanguards scoring in double figures, along with Murphy (12 points), freshman Alycone Moore of Charlotte (12), freshman Reatt Foster of Hartsville, S.C., (12) and freshman Antonio Cole of Creedmoor (ten). Beverly also made the most rebounds (13), followed by De’Sedric Downey of Oxford (11). Ballard contributed the most assists (seven).

The Vanguards have two more road games before returning home Nov. 12 to face Bryant & Stratton College at 7 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson.
