VGCC Vanguards Pull Out Win over Roanoke-Chowan

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 with an 86-73 victory over Roanoke-Chowan Community College Wednesday night (Nov. 14).Down by six at the half, the VGCC Vanguards came back to defeat a quality team from the Ahoskie-based college, with the lead changing hands numerous times. The RCCC Waves are a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association.Jayson Brown of Raleigh led the Vanguards with 20 points, followed by Henderson resident E.J. Henderson with 17, Jeremy Lenoir of Raleigh with 14, Gianni Jefferson of Henderson with 12 and Rodney Alexander of Warrenton with 11.Avery Wilson of Louisburg, the VGCC head coach, was pleased with the balance demonstrated by having five players in double figures, and with the turnout by the home crowd. After the crucial test provided by the tough RCCC squad, Wilson hopes to continue improving and gaining fan support for the fledgling basketball program.It was Vance-Granville’s second home game in the Western Vance High School gym and its second home victory. VGCC bested Piedmont Community College, 149-43, at home on Nov. 10. After the victory over RCCC, the Vanguards had little time to rest, since they were scheduled to be visited by the Virginia Heat on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. Then the VGCC team will take a break, returning for another home game on Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. versus Bonner Academy. There is no charge for admission.
