VGCC Vanguards lose pair of home games

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team recently suffered a pair of conference losses at home.

On Jan. 21, the Patrick Henry Community College Patriots traveled from Virginia to take on the VGCC Vanguards at the Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson. The result was a 104-63 win for the Patriots, who remained undefeated in conference (Region X, Division II) play. The two teams will meet again on Feb. 21 in Martinsville, Virginia for VGCC’s last game of the regular season.

That game was followed by a Jan. 24 loss to the Lancers of Lenoir Community College by a score of 93-74. Raymond Dunn led the team in scoring, with 19 points. He was joined in double figures by L.C. Hester (17 points) and Mitchell Jeffries (12).

The Vanguards’ record fell to 10-8 (4-6 in Region X, Division II). Next, the Vanguards face Rockingham Community College at home on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. After road trips to Central Carolina Community College and Pitt Community College, VGCC returns home on Feb. 7 to face Surry Community College at 3 p.m. All VGCC home games are free and open to the public. Despite the two losses, several Vanguards are making a name for themselves in national basketball statistics. As of Jan. 24, Raymond Dunn was fifth nationwide in Division II in scoring, with 370 points and 23.1 points per game. At the same time, he was fifth in rebounding, with 187 total rebounds and 11.7 rebounds per game. Dunn, Mitchell Jeffries and Bryan Burrell were all in the top 50 in field goal percentage. Bryan Burrell stood at fourth nationwide in assists, with 114 total and 7.1 assists per game. Mitchell Jeffries was right behind Burrell at number five in assists. He had racked up 106 assists and 6.6 assists per game. Jeffries also had 49 steals and 3.1 steals per game, making him seventh in the nation in that mark. L.C. Hester stood at 12th in the nation in blocks per game, with an average of 2.1.

As a team, VGCC was ninth in the country in offensive average, scoring an average of 86.1 points per game. More impressively, the Vanguards had the nation’s second-highest team field goal percentage, making 52 percent of their shots from the floor.
