VGCC Vanguards go into break in good shape; will play 6 home games in January

Heading into a holiday break, the Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team has compiled a 7-3 record so far in the college’s first season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The VGCC Vanguards are 2-1 in their conference, Region 10 of NJCAA Division II.

VGCC’s wins include victories over Johnston Community College (86-69), Raleigh’s Stevens Prep Academy (94-77), Durham’s Mt. Zion Christian Academy (68-65), Roanoke-Chowan Community College (103-91), Thomas Nelson Community College (90-79) and Sandhills Community College (97-92).

Most recently, VGCC lost on the road to Lenoir Community College by an 85-73 margin on Dec. 3, but then returned home to defeat the previously unbeaten Pitt Community College Bulldogs 98-93 on Dec. 13. “Pitt is one of the top teams in our conference, and to go into the New Year with a big win, it’s a good feeling,” said VGCC head coach Avery L. Wilson.

The Vanguards will start 2009 on the road with visits to Wilkes Community College (Jan. 3), Rockingham Community College (Jan. 5) and Surry Community College (Jan. 7).

Then, VGCC finishes a busy January schedule with a six-game home stand at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson. First, area rival Louisburg College visits VGCC on Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. Sandhills CC follows on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. On Jan. 17 at 3 p.m., Johnston CC will try to avenge its earlier home loss to the Vanguards. Patrick Henry Community College will travel to Henderson for a Jan. 21 meeting at 7 p.m. VGCC will get another crack at Lenoir CC on Jan. 24 at 3 p.m. Finally, the Vanguards will take on Rockingham CC on Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.

All VGCC home games are free and open to the public.
