VGCC Vanguards defeat Guilford Tech Titans, 86-77

The Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards snapped a four-game losing streak and achieved their first conference win of the 2014-15 men’s basketball season with a victory over Guilford Technical Community College on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Playing on the Vanguards’ home court, Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson, the teams appeared to be evenly matched in the first half. The Titans held a 45-41 lead at intermission, but the home team came roaring back in the second half to pull out a convincing 86-77 win.

Tyrek Beverly of Oxford and Khadier Fulcher of Stem led VGCC in scoring, with 19 points apiece. Fulcher (pictured above) also had the most rebounds (11) and steals (four) for the Vanguards. Jordan Bunting of Macon had a strong performance, with ten rebounds and nine points. Raekwon Hall of Raleigh made a team-high five assists to go along with eight points and five rebounds.

As a team, the Vanguards had much success from behind the three-point line, shooting 54.5%. They also scored on 73.3% of their free throw attempts. Antonio Murphy of Fayetteville made all six of his free throws, accounting for most of his ten points for the game.

“The team is beginning to fully buy into the system of how we will play games, the players are maturing in their understanding that classroom performance complements athletics, and they trust each other now,” VGCC head coach Michael Woody reflected. “Khadier Fulcher's leadership in the role of Team Captain is a huge plus for Saturday's positive outcome and any future success we experience.”

After five upcoming games on the road, the Vanguards will return home to host Pitt Community College on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. The regular season continues for the next month, with VGCC’s last scheduled game being a rematch at Guilford Tech on Feb. 25.
