VGCC Vanguards 10-6 after three January home games

The Vance-Granville Community College men’s basketball team went 1-2 in the Vanguards’ first three home games of 2009.

On Jan. 10, the Louisburg College Hurricanes defeated VGCC 83-72 in the first-ever men’s basketball game on the varsity level between the nearby schools. Louisburg College has a nationally recognized team and a storied basketball tradition, while VGCC is playing its first season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association . Mitchell Jeffries led the Vanguards with 25 points. Raymond Dunn added 23 and Bryan Burrell scored 11. VGCC will try to even the score with LC in a Feb. 11 rematch at Holton Gymnasium on the LC campus.

The Vanguards rebounded from the loss to dominate the Sandhills Community College Flyers on Jan. 14 at Southern Vance High School in Henderson. Vance-Granville led 49-33 at the half, on the way to a 103-71 victory. L.C. Hester was the leading VGCC scorer, with 21 points. Five Vanguards scored in double figures (Mitchell Jeffries with 20, Raymond Dunn with 17, Dane Williams with 14 and Bryan Burrell with 12).

On Jan. 17, VGCC lost 92-75 to the Johnston Community College Jaguars. VGCC led by one point at the half. Raymond Dunn scored 21 points while Bryan Burrell contributed 20. The loss brought VGCC’s regular season record to 10-6 and the team’s record in the conference (Region 10, NJCAA Division II) to 4-4.

The Vanguards play three more home games to finish out January: Patrick Henry Community College on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.; Lenoir CC on Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.; and Rockingham CC on Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. All VGCC home games are free and open to the public.
