VGCC Trustees Swear in Members at July Meeting
The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held their bimonthly meeting July 17. During the meeting, Ninth District Court Judge Randolph Baskerville swore in members reappointed for a new four-year term. The board also recognized the newly selected ambassadors for the college, and they honored Pat Graham for her years of service to the College.
Reappointment of Members
Reappointed for another four-year term on the VGCC Board of Trustees are former NC Legislator and retired businessman T. W. Ellis, Jr. who joined the Board in 1996; real estate developer John M. Foster who joined the Board in 1994; and realtor L. Opie Frazier, Jr. who served 1971-1996 and then rejoined the Board again in 2002. All are of Henderson. Their terms will expire June 30, 2010. Ninth District Court Judge Randolph Baskerville swore in the reappointments. The Board is comprised of 12 community leaders from the four-county area; one Trustee Emeritus, retired businessman John K. Nelms; Franklin County liaison Ralph S. Knott; and a student trustee.
Recognition of Ambassadors
Board members recognized the 12 newly selected College Ambassadors for the 2006-2007 school year by presenting jackets to the members. Ambassadors represent the college at special campus events and community functions.
The new ambassadors are Joan D. Ayscue (Recreation and Leisure Studies), Adrian E. Davis (Accounting), Joyce Long (Accounting), Regina H. Miles (College Transfer), Nazifa S. Pathan (College Transfer), all of Henderson; Rebecca Neal of Norlina (Teacher’s Assistant program); Shalom A. Cherian (Biology), Dawn M. Tom (A.S. degree), and John Williamson (College Transfer), all of Oxford. Youngsville resident Angelia A. Castro (Medical Office Administration) will represent the Franklin County Campus. Dalena B. Shearin of Castalia (Human Services Technology/Mental Health) will be the South Campus Ambassador, and Edward Seward of Warrenton (Human Services/Substance Abuse) will represent the Warren County Campus.
To qualify as an Ambassador, a student must attend VGCC for one year, achieve a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and undergo an interview and selection process.
Honored for Service
Also during the July meeting retired special assistant to the president Pat Graham was honored for 36 years of service to the College. Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees Chair Donald C. Seifert Sr. presented Mrs. Graham with a framed resolution of appreciation.
One of the first employees hired when Vance-Granville Community College opened its doors in 1969 as Vance County Technical Institute, Mrs. Graham has worked with every president and served as secretary to both the College Board of Trustees and the Endowment Fund Board of Directors. Mrs. Graham has witnessed the tremendous growth of the College which has expanded since 1969 to include four campuses now serving about 17,000 people each year. She has also seen the successful growth of the college’s Endowment Fund, which now totals more than $5 million and provides scholarships to about 300 students each year.
The upcoming meeting of the VGCC Board of Trustees will be a retreat on August 21.
Other Business
Also during the July meeting, the Board voted to move forward with the facilities master plan in selecting architects; and the Board approved the 2006-2007 County Current and Capital Budgets.
