VGCC students hold musical fundraiser

The Vance-Granville Community College chapter of the Phi Beta Lambda business student organization will hold a fundraiser concert with a “retro” theme on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. in the Civic Center on the college’s main campus in Vance County. “Back in the Day: A Musical Tribute to The Good Old Days” will feature gospel-themed skits and musical performances by local artists.

Among the scheduled acts are gospel skits performed by Sister Doris Burnette and Ann Harris of Church on the Rock Ministries of Warren County, and by the Rev. Veronica Judd of Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church. Musical performers are scheduled to include James Martin & Harmony; the Rev. Roy Burroughs & Work In Progress; Music Minister Wilbur Tharpe of Raleigh; and Elder Angela King of Franklin County. The event also features poetry, a “natural hair” contest, a “Shout-Off” competition, and an old-fashioned dress competition.

The program is being produced by Connie Ragland of Henderson, writer and director of hit gospel plays “Too Young to be Saved” and “Judgment Day.”

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the VGCC chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, the national organization for college students who are preparing for a variety of careers in business.

Tickets are $10 at the door and $8 in advance (or $5 for those ages 17 and under). Tickets can be purchased from any Professional Division member of Phi Beta Lambda, Hill’s Music Shoppe in Henderson or Betty B’s in Henderson. For more information, call VGCC Phi Beta Lambda advisor LaTonya Steele at (252) 738-3447 or Connie Ragland at (252) 432-7127.
