VGCC Students encouraged to apply for Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship

Vance-Granville Community College students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university are encouraged to apply for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship program. The application deadline for 2011 is Wednesday, January 19.

The Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship Program enables community college students with exceptional promise and demonstrated financial need to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Students in any discipline are eligible. The Foundation provides up to $30,000 per year to each of approximately 60 deserving students selected annually, making it the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students in the country. Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees – for the final two to three years necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships he or she may receive.

To be eligible to receive the scholarship, students must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation representative at their college, which at VGCC is Vice President of Institutional Advancement/Endowment director Jo Anna Jones . Students cannot apply directly to the Foundation. College representatives review applications and nominate between two and four applicants, depending on institutional enrollment.

To compete for the Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, a candidate must:

• Be a current student at an accredited U.S. community college or two-year institution with sophomore status by Dec. 31, 2010, or be a recent graduate (within the last five years);

• Have a cumulative college grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent);

• Plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to begin full-time studies in fall 2011, and

• Be nominated by his or her college.
