VGCC students and advisor attend SNCAE statewide conference

The Vance-Granville Community College chapter of the Student North Carolina Association of Educators (SNCAE) recently sent a delegation to the organization’s fall leadership conference, held Sept. 21 at North Carolina A&T State University. Above, from left (pictured during the conference), VGCC was represented by Jackie Heath, chapter advisor for SNCAE (and head of the college’s School-Age Education program ), student leadership team member Dontravious Harrison of Warren Early College High School , and chapter president Franceine Cole of Afton.

SNCAE is a pre-professional organization for college students who are preparing for careers in education, and has chapters at colleges and universities across the state. VGCC is currently the only community college with a chapter. SNCAE is a division of the larger North Carolina Association of Educators, the leading professional organization for educators in North Carolina. VGCC students in education, early childhood or college transfer courses are eligible to join the chapter.

At the conference, students attended leadership training sessions for particular roles or offices, as well as workshops on growing chapter membership, engaging members, grants and fundraising. A special guest speaker was David Tjaden, chair of the National Education Association Student Program. Coordinating the conference was Elic Senter of Franklinton, Manager for Instructional Advocacy and Organizing and state student organizer at NCAE.
