VGCC Starts Beginning Quilting Class

Quilting is one of the most popular personal enrichment classes taught at Vance-Granville Community College with four classes scheduled this fall.

But many people may think the current classes may be too advanced, and they would be reluctant to sign up. Therefore, the college is offering a class for beginners to get them started on the basics of this timeless craft.

Velvet Boyd, who has been a member of Peggy Stocks’ quilting classes at VGCC for several years, will instruct the beginning quilting class. It will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 in Room 5201 on the main campus, beginning Sept. 9 and running through Dec. 2.

“This class will introduce people to quilting,” Boyd said. “It will be sewing by hand, and we’ll look at techniques to do that.” She said students will sew patches and learn patterns and, hopefully, by the end of the class be working on challenging quilt designs.”

“I hope to get them ready to ‘graduate’ to Peggy’s classes,” said Boyd.

Cost of the beginning quilting class is $45. For more information and to pre-register, call the VGCC Continuing Education office at (252) 492-2061.
