VGCC Staffer Donates Hair To ‘Locks of Love’

People around Vance-Granville Community College have been asking, “What happened to Sheila McCall’s long hair?”

Answer: She gave it away.

McCall, the lead accounting technician in the college Business Office, let her hair grow for a year and a half until there were more than 10 inches to donate to “Locks of Love.” This is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children 18 and under who have developed long-term hair loss. The hair helps restore self esteem and confidence for these youngsters.

Sheila said she learned of the program from her niece, Teresa Dover, who has donated her hair twice to the program. Teresa, who is a Vance-Granville Community College graduate, is currently a psychology student at North Carolina Central University.

“It just seemed like a good thing to do,” said McCall, a Henderson resident. So now she sports a fashionable short “do” and feels really good about it.

Teresa Ruff, a cosmetology instructor at Vance-Granville, cut Sheila’s long hair and shipped it off to  Locks of Love. Vance-Granville Community College will cut the hair free of charge for any staff member who participates in Locks of Love.

Sheila McCall’s generosity has inspired Sandra Newton, secretary for Plant Operations at the college, to let her hair grow so she can donate it for the use of a needy young person.
