VGCC South Campus Art Classes Offer Something For Everyone

If you want to paint in oils, pastels, acrylics or water colors, the Continuing Education art classes at Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus are for you.

Also, if you’re a beginner and need basic drawing and composition instruction before you begin painting, you can find that in the classes taught at the campus on N.C. 56 between Butner and Creedmoor.

Chad Hughes of Creedmoor has been teaching art classes at South Campus for more than a dozen years. He has Tuesday morning and Monday evening classes, and there are openings in both sessions that will begin in early September. The Monday classes run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will begin Sept. 8 and conclude Dec. 1. Tuesday morning classes are from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will run from Sept. 9 to Dec. 2.

Hughes has a bachelor of arts from East Carolina University and a master’s in painting and drawing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has taught at the Durham Arts Council since 1981, and he is in his third year of teaching art at North Carolina Central University.

“I work with each person in the class individually, and I encourage them to follow their own areas of interest, whether they are landscapes, still life or others,” he said.

Registration for either the Monday evening or Tuesday morning classes is $45. For more information or to pre-register, call the VGCC Continuing Education office at (252) 492-2061).
