VGCC recognizes Students for Summer Employment

Vance-Granville Community College’s Workforce Investment Act (WIA) department held a dinner and ceremony on Aug. 18 to recognize local college and high school students who gained valuable work experience this summer. The WIA Summer Youth Employment program placed students in a wide variety of paying jobs, at which they worked up to 32 hours per week. Placements included local schools, government agencies and other organizations in Vance and Franklin counties.

 

Participants recognized for working in Vance County were Valeria Carrasco, Janelle Turner and Rabsha-Keh Wilkerson, all of whom worked for the City of Henderson; Tamara Marshall, Franklin-Vance-Warren Opportunity; Cynthia Joyner, S’chele Neal and Kierra Wyatt, all Southern Vance High School; Justin Davis, VGCC Main Campus Security department; Lillieann Lemay, VGCC South Campus; and Jaleel Seward and Markeithia Wade, both Western Vance High School.

 

Franklin County participants included Britney Perry, who worked for the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce; Erika Bell, Franklinton High School; Krika Bell, Franklin County Library (Franklinton branch); Nicole Griffin, Franklin County Library (Louisburg branch); Ruby Rodriguez, Franklin County Library (Louisburg branch); Quinn Jones and Montre Lewis, both Franklin County Parks and Recreation; and Keith Smith, Safe Space Thrift Store.

 

Certificates of appreciation were also presented to all participating employers. WIA Director Sylvia Jones thanked the organizations for hiring and mentoring the young people. “The habits and skills these students have learned this summer will last them a lifetime,” Jones said.

 

In concluding remarks, VGCC Vice President of Community and Economic Development Vanessa Jones expressed pride in the students for their accomplishments and wished them well in the future. She said that the quality of their work is valued by employers, who continue to support the summer program year after year.

 

The summer youth employment program and other services provided by the WIA department are supported by the Kerr-Tar Workforce Development Board , which administers federal funds from the U.S. Department of Labor.
