VGCC Radiography students and instructors excel in classroom

Both students and instructors in the Radiography program at Vance-Granville Community College have recently been displaying academic excellence.

Of the Radiography graduates from May 2010 who have taken the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists national examination this summer, 100 percent have passed. That success is a repeat of the 100-percent passing rates achieved by the graduating classes of 2008 and 2009.

Meanwhile, during the past school year, three of those students’ instructors have also been successful students themselves.

Instructor Estelle Alston, a Franklinton resident, completed a bachelor’s degree in Radiologic Sciences at the Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences in August 2009. Alston previously earned her associate degree at VGCC and a certificate in nuclear medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Program head/instructor Angela M. Thomas of Hillsborough completed a Master of Science degree in Health Care Management with Honors from Ashworth College in December 2009. Thomas previously graduated with an associate in applied science degree in Radiologic Technology from Pitt Community College and a bachelor of arts in Forensic Science from Guilford College.

Finally, clinical coordinator/instructor Priscilla Wells of Nashville completed a Master of Health Administration degree with a concentration in Education through the University of Phoenix in May 2010. She previously earned an associate in applied science degree at Edgecombe Community College and a bachelor’s degree at Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences.

“These outstanding faculty members are to be congratulated and commended for their achievements,” said VGCC Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Ray Goldberg. “All the members of the Radiography team are dedicated both to their students and to their own professional development. That dedication recently helped the program receive renewed national accreditation by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.”

Based at VGCC’s South Campus between Creedmoor and Butner, the two-year Radiography curriculum prepares graduates to be radiographers, skilled health care professionals who use radiation to produce images of the human body. In addition to classroom and lab instruction offered at South Campus, students gain hands-on clinical experience at area hospitals.
