VGCC Quilting students take seasonal challenge

Participants in the Quilting class on the Main Campus of Vance-Granville Community College recently completed a fun project to create pieces of art that will come in handy during the holiday season. Students and their instructor, Peggy Stocks of Kerr Lake, took part in a “Christmas Tree Skirt Challenge.” They worked on these quilts starting in the spring, using “Quiltmaker” patterns. Overseeing the friendly competition were challenge co-chairs Dianne Ellis and Dottie Ellis, both of Raleigh.

Once the tree skirts were complete, the entire class voted in late November for their favorites, and prizes were awarded to the winners. Coming in first was Phyllis Davis of Henderson. The instructor, Peggy Stocks, was the runner-up, and Geraldine Greene Ramsey of Youngsville placed third.

Stocks said that the purpose of such a quilting challenge is for students “to stretch,” and she was delighted with how the class responded. She added that a new challenge will be held in the spring of 2015. Her next day class starts Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015. She is also scheduled to lead an evening class on Thursdays, starting Jan. 15.

Anyone interested in either class must register by Jan. 5. Registration for these or other Personal Enrichment courses can be completed online at www.vgcc.edu/ped  or in person at Main Campus, Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
