VGCC Psychology instructor offers seminars on Dreams and Stress

Peter Metzner, a Psychology instructor at Vance-Granville Community College, will again offer free seminars for VGCC students, faculty and staff several times this semester.

In one seminar, “Practicing Safe Stress,” Metzner will help participants learn how to recognize stress and better manage stressors found in school and life. He will also lead participants through an experiential relaxation exercise. This seminar will be offered on Wednesday, Sept. 14 both at noon and at 1:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 19 both at noon and at 1:30 p.m. (just in time for students preparing for successful mid-term exams); and on Wednesday, Nov. 30 both at noon and at 1:30 p.m. (just as students begin to plan for final exams). Each time, the seminar is held in room 6106 of Building 6 on Main Campus.

In another seminar, Metzner will facilitate a “dream circle,” in which participants will learn to how better understand and work with their own dreams and each others’. This seminar will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at noon, at 1:30 p.m. and at 3 p.m., in room 6106 of Building 6 on Main Campus. Metzner will examine what dreams can communicate to us and why we should pay attention to our dreams. He will consider some real examples of dreams in an interactive discussion. According to Metzner, leading researchers believe that all dreams, even nightmares, are useful in promoting the dreamer’s health and wholeness. “The psychologist Carl Jung said that ‘In our sleep, we awaken to who we really are’,” Metzner noted. “Dreams reveal areas of our lives that need attention, showing us where adaptation and growth need to take place. Much like the reins of a horse, they correct us when we go off track.”

Peter Metzner, MA, MPA, CLC, has taught Psychology at VGCC since 2002. He has researched and studied dreams with the Journey through Wholeness, Triangle Jung Society, Robert Johnson, Barry Williams, Jeremy Taylor, John Ryan Haule and others. He has written articles on leadership and dream work and has given keynote presentations and workshops on dreams to organizations such as the National Wellness Institute, Center for Creative Leadership, and the North Carolina Association of Business Coaches. Metzner has also facilitated classes on dreams for the Institute for Life Coach Training.
