VGCC offers Sewing class at Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer a Sewing class on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The course, taught by Lunnie Taborn of Oxford, will be held on Monday evenings from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m., Oct. 21 through Nov. 25 in room 5201 (Building 5).

Taborn has been teaching sewing classes like this one at VGCC for the past 13 years. Each session, newcomers join students who return to take the course again and again. “I’ve had a couple students who have stayed with me through every class for all these years,” Taborn said. “I’ve been fortunate to meet all kinds of different people, men and women, through teaching, and I’m thankful that I have the ability to share what I know and love.” Taborn introduces students to the basics of sewing and using fabric and then guides students through projects of their own choosing. “There’s no limit to the variety of things we do, from ‘A’ to ‘Z,’” Taborn said. “I usually start a student with a pillowcase because it’s relatively easy, but after that, students might sew blankets, scarves, clothes for babies and toddlers, and home décor items like place mats, runners, valances and curtains.” Students also enjoy a sense of community and stress relief through their weekly meetings.

The total cost per person, including all fees, is $49. Students must be age 16 years or older.

Registration in advance is required. The deadline to register is Oct. 14.
