VGCC offers Securities Law seminar for Small Businesses

Vance-Granville Community College’s Small Business Center will present a free seminar to help entrepreneurs understand the rules about seeking investors on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. in Room F131 at VGCC’s Franklin County Campus near Louisburg.

The seminar, entitled “Raising Business Capital: FAQ’s for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesspersons,” will be conducted by John Maron of the Securities Division of the N.C. Secretary of State, the agency which administers state securities laws. As a general rule, when the owner of a business asks others to invest funds in his or her business, such a transaction is considered a securities offering, which is regulated under state and federal law. Anyone who is trying to raise business capital from investors, even if they are friends and family members, should attend this seminar before asking for investments.    

The seminar is presented by the Small Business Center in partnership with the Securities Division, the Greater Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, the Franklin County Economic Development Commission and the N.C. Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
