VGCC Offers Scholarships To Top Students Of All Area High Schools

All students who complete their junior years of high school in Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin counties in the top 20 percent of their classes are eligible for $1,000 scholarships at Vance-Granville Community College.

The scholarships are available to all 2002 graduates of public and private high schools in the counties served by Vance-Granville who will enter college this fall as full-time curriculum students.

High schools have provided the names of students who qualify, and the college has mailed them packages explaining the program, along with special scholarship applications. Students who wish to enter Vance-Granville in Fall Semester 2002 have until Feb. 15 to return their applications to the college.

In the past, Vance-Granville has offered this scholarship to those who finished in the top 10 percent, and the college has extended the offer to top 20 percent students for the first time this year. The scholarships are provided by the school’s Endowment Fund and Scholarship program, whose assets are close to $5 million.

Full-time students are those who take 12 or more semester hours. The $1,000 award will pay for a student’s registration and fees for one year of study at the community college. The scholarship is guaranteed for the first year of study at Vance-Granville. Recipients have to reapply for a second year award, and most of them receive the award if their grades are acceptable, according to Gene Purvis, assistant dean of Student Services.

Students or parents who desire more information about these scholarships may call Gene Purvis at (252) 492-2061, ext. 3233.
