VGCC Offers Preparation, Refresher BioWork Course At Franklin Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer a Pre-BioWork course on the Franklin County Campus this summer.

Classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6 to 10 p.m., beginning July 11 and running through Aug. 10 in the Biotechnology classroom at the campus on N.C. 56 just west of Louisburg.

Pre-BioWork is designed to prepare students for Vance-Granville’s BioWork program. Pre-BioWork will provide a basic understanding of selected subject matter that is vital to the BioWork course.

The class has been developed into three modules. The first, Human Resource Development, will prepare students to enter the workforce, specifically within the field of biotechnology. Students will prepare résumés and cover letters as well as sharpen their interview skills.

Math is the second component of Pre-BioWork, dedicated to extensive review of basic math skills. These include, but are not limited to, English to metric conversions and metric-to-metric conversions. The third module is an overall review of basic science concepts, including a review of chemistry basics as well as biology and an introduction to Biotechnology.

The course will be ideal for anyone interested in taking BioWork and is also designed for the student who has struggled with the BioWork course previously, said Julie Kinlaw, BioWork coordinator for Vance-Granville.

Cost of the course is $60, which includes the cost of student manuals. Registration for Pre-BioWork will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 11, in the Biotechnology classroom at the Franklin County Campus.
