VGCC Offers Opportunity To Make Dolls Just In Time For Christmas Giving

Wouldn’t you like to have a special doll for that special daughter, granddaughter, niece or friend to give as a Christmas present?

Why not make it yourself in a special evening Doll-Making class being offered at Vance-Granville Community College?

Eleanor Wester, shown in photograph at right, will teach the new class that will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Room 5230 on the main campus in Vance County.

Students will learn how to make baby dolls, Wester said. “We will take porcelain greenware heads, arms and legs, clean them, fire them in kilns and China paint them,” she said. “The porcelain parts will be attached to soft bodies, and the students’ goal will be to complete a doll by the end of the class, in time for Christmas.”

Wester is a veteran teacher in ceramics and doll making. She taught ceramics classes for Vance-Granville Community College when it began as Vance County Technical Institute in the former Maria Parham Hospital on Chestnut Street in 1970. She started a doll-making class when the college moved to its current campus on Poplar Creek Road in 1976 and has taught this craft many years since.

Cost of the doll-making class is $35, and interested persons can pre-register by calling the VGCC Continuing Education office at 492-2061.
