VGCC Offers New Medication Aide Course

To respond to changing demands in the health-care industry, Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer a new Medication Aide course at its Main Campus in Vance County, and at two of its satellite campuses.

Classes will be held on the Main Campus Monday through Thursday, September 11-14 and September 25-28, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. At the Franklin County Campus, the class will be held Monday through Thursday, October 2-5 and October 9-12, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. VGCC will also offer an evening class at the Warren County Campus, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (September 5-6, 12-13, and 18-19), from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

To register for the course, a student must have a high school diploma or GED and must be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide Registry. Students who successfully complete the course will be able to take a state exam and qualify to be listed on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. Medication Aides will work in settings such as home-health agencies and skilled nursing facilities under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Due to changes in state rules, new Medication Aide positions at such facilities will go into effect in October 2006. VGCC will offer these courses to ensure that medication aides will be ready to start immediately.

Persons interested in taking the course at Main Campus can register for either class on August 29 at 3 p.m. in Building 7. At the Franklin County Campus, registration will be held on September 25 at 3:30 p.m. in Building 5. Registration for evening classes at Warren County Campus will be held on August 28 at 4 p.m. in Building 4. The cost for this course is $55.

VGCC nurse-aide instructors, both full-time and part-time, have recently been trained to teach the Medication Aide course through a sixteen-hour “Train-the-Trainer” class taught at the Main Campus and at Franklin County Campus. They were joined by fellow instructors from Piedmont Community College.
