VGCC Offers New Global Logistics Program

Vance-Granville Community College seeks to prepare students to compete in the 21st-century global economy, and one new program being offered this fall is a prime example of that preparation: Global Logistics Technology. VGCC’s fall semester begins on August 16.

The GLT program will prepare individuals for a multitude of career opportunities in distribution, transportation and manufacturing organizations. Classroom instruction, field of study experiences, and practical laboratory applications of logistics management and global technology capabilities are all included in the program.Logistics is a term used widely in industry to describe all of the elements that come into play as products and materials are distributed around the globe, such as procurement, transportation, warehousing, and inventory control that together constitute supply management. Typically, logistics personnel rely on high-tech information systems to handle orders and monitor items as they move through a chain that might stretch thousands of miles. The GLT curriculum will integrate written course materials, internet-based instruction and laboratory simulation. It will teach participants the advanced technical skills needed to ship, track and receive goods around the world. “This program will serve both entry-level students to the logistics field, and also people currently employed in the field who need to upgrade their skills or gain new skills,” said Bobby Van Brunt, VGCC’s Dean of Business and Applied Technologies.

Global Logistics Technology is being offered in collaboration with Lenoir Community College, based in Kinston. Students will take all general education classes (such as English, Math and Economics) on VGCC campuses, and then they will take major courses offered by LCC via the Internet.Course work includes computer applications, accounting, business law, economics, management, industrial sciences, and international studies. Students will solve different levels of logistics-related problems through case study evaluations and supply chain projects utilizing logistical hardware and intelligent software tools.Graduates should qualify for positions in a wide range of government agencies, manufacturing, and service organizations. Employment opportunities include entry-level purchasing, material management, warehousing, inventory, transportation coordinators, and logistics analysts. Upon completion, graduates may be eligible for certification credentials through APICS (The Association for Operations Management) and AST&L (The American Society of Transportation & Logistics). For more information on the GLT program, contact instructor Steven Sievert at (252) 738-3480 .
