VGCC offers Medical Transcriptionist Workshop

Vance-Granville Community College will offer a three-hour workshop to help area residents explore a career in medical transcription. “Work at Home as a Medical Transcriptionist” is scheduled to be held Tuesday, Feb. 26 from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The instructor, Deborah Burns, has been a medical transcriptionist for more than 30 years.

According to Burns, demand for full-time and part-time medical transcriptionists is soaring. “If you want to choose your own hours, have a business at home, find clients easily and make great money, this class will get you started — whether you’re just exploring possibilities or are already experienced,” Burns said. She will offer a step-by-step guide to what medical transcription is, including the many job options available, such as working as a medical scribe; medical transcription versus medical billing and coding; learning medical transcription simply and cost-effectively; and avoiding expensive and common mistakes. Students will learn about marketing, operating capital and grants, pricing, collections, equipment, software, transcription equipment, electronic files, business taxes, professional organizations, networking, employees versus subcontractors, growing a business throughout the U.S. and how to get hands-on work experience.

For additional training, VGCC also offers a Medical Transcription Specialist Certificate through the Medical Office Administration curriculum program.

The registration fee for the workshop is $13, and students will also purchase a workbook for $20, which may be paid to the instructor at the time of the class. For more information and to register, contact Theresa Somerville at (252) 738-3427 or SomervilleT@vgcc.edu .
