VGCC Offers Medical Terminology Courses Online Beginning In Fall

Employees in the healthcare field and persons planning to enter health education programs at Vance-Granville Community College can get a jump-start this fall by taking Medical Terminology online.

Medical Terminology I will be offered through the Internet this Fall Semester beginning in August, and Medical Terminology II will be taught online in Spring Semester that will start next January.

Taking these courses online will allow current full-time employees in the health field to learn or broaden their medical terminology language, while keeping their full-time positions, said Tammy Care, Medical Assisting progra m head and instructor at Vance-Granville.

“The courses will also be great for students that are currently enrolled in the Pre-Health courses to have a better medical vocabulary before being accepted into one of the health education curriculums,” Care said.

Programs offered in health education at Vance-Granville include Associate Degree Nursing, Practical Nursing, Radiography, Medical Assisting and Pharmacy Technology.

Even high school seniors could benefit from the course, Care added. Students interested in medicine who are going to take pre-med next year in college might consider taking these two courses this school year to get ahead of their peers in college, she said.

Students in the courses will learn prefixes, suffixes, and word roots used in medical language. Topics include medical vocabulary, anatomy, physiology, pathological conditions and treatment options.
