VGCC Offers Class to Prepare Medical Coders for Certification

Certification is becoming a requirement for persons in healthcare facilities who handle medical billing and who file insurance claims. Vance-Granville Community College is offering a class to prepare them to meet this requirement.

A Medical Coding Certification Prep class will be held in the college’s Computer Center on the main campus in Vance County, beginning Aug. 10. The 18-hour class will be held on Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and will conclude on Aug. 25.

Marianne Durling, who has taught medical coding classes at the college several years, will be the instructor for the prep class. She said the instruction will prepare persons who have at least 2 years of coding experience to take either the American Academy of Professional Coders or the American Health Information Management Association certification exams.

Durling said the class will cover the differences between the certifications, membership and certification requirements for each. A great deal of the class will be comprised of taking mock exams, both electronic and paper exams.

Cost of the course is $50. For more information and to register, call Marianne Durling at (252) 738-3435.
