VGCC Nursing students participate in community college system conference

Six students from the Student Nurses’ Association (SNA) at Vance-Granville Community College attended the North Carolina Community College System Conference in October to assist with health assessments for participants, who included faculty, staff and administrators from throughout the 58-member college system. The students included Heather Avery of Wake Forest, Rachel Edwards of Louisburg, Deborah Janifer of Youngsville, Ladonya Tinnin of Durham, Sara Wheeler of Raleigh and Trey Wright of Franklinton.

All six are second-year students in the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program. They performed blood pressure checks, accu-checks for blood glucose, and body mass index (BMI) calculations for attendees at the conference, which was held at the Raleigh Convention Center. VGCC was one of four colleges whose Nursing students were on hand to offer these assessments to participants and use the skills they are learning in their programs to provide helpful health information.

The SNA students enjoyed meeting nursing students and educators from other community colleges around the state. “Participants were very pleased with the professionalism of our students, as well as their medical knowledge,” said VGCC Nursing instructor/simulation coordinator Tracey Hight, who accompanied the students. “This was a wonderful opportunity for the Vance-Granville Nursing students, as they work towards pinning and graduation.”

Approximately 130 participants were assessed during the event, according to Renee Godwin Batts, a registered nurse who is an education consultant for Health Sciences programs at the N.C. Community College System . “The nursing students’ professionalism, knowledge and clinical skills were apparent to the participants,” Batts said. “We are so appreciative that the nursing faculty and students provided these health assessments to conference attendees.”
