VGCC Nursing student receives prestigious scholarship

A Vance-Granville Community College student has been awarded a scholarship designed to recognize and assist some of the state’s most promising future nurses. Alicia Charmaine Robinson of Henderson, a student in the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing  program, was one of 25 students from across the state selected to receive a “Great 100” Scholarship, worth $1,500. She was also one of only eight recipients from the two-year college level. As a scholarship recipient, Robinson is invited to attend the annual Great 100 Gala this fall in Greensboro. “This is a great honor for Alicia and for Vance-Granville,” said Erica Jastrow, VGCC’s director of nursing.

The Great 100, Inc. , based in Greensboro, is a grassroots organization whose mission is to positively impact the image of Nursing by recognizing nursing excellence and providing scholarships for nursing education in North Carolina. Since 1989, The Great 100 has awarded over $367,000 in nursing scholarships. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled in a nursing program in North Carolina, must have demonstrated excellence in school and/or practice and must have a sincere commitment to the nursing profession. VGCC faculty members recommended Robinson for the scholarship.

“I feel very honored that my nursing instructors believed that I was deserving of this scholarship,” Robinson said. “The Great 100 scholarship is a true blessing and has really helped me to continue my education.” Robinson, who has also received an endowed VGCC scholarship, considers her Associate Degree in Nursing a stepping-stone toward her goal of opening her own long-term care business. In 2009, Robinson started down this path when she graduated from VGCC with a Practical Nursing diploma. She would like to eventually earn a master’s degree and a doctoral degree that would allow her to become a nurse practitioner.
