VGCC names Blaine to direct Occupational Extension training

Vance-Granville Community College recently named Jean A. Blaine of Durham as the college’s new Director of Occupational Extension. Blaine (pictured above) has been a member of the VGCC staff since 2007 and most recently served as Director of Prison Programs.

In her new role, Blaine supervises the coordinators for Occupational Healthcare and Prison Programs. The Occupational Extension department’s programs are tailored to meet the needs for vocational training and retraining in the community. “Our focus is on offering and developing educational programs that will lead to jobs,” Blaine said. “We aim to meet the needs of the citizens and employers in Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties, and we will continue to add new programs to respond to changes in the economy.”

Among the current Occupational Extension training programs are BioWork, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Phlebotomy.

Blaine joined VGCC’s prison education department after a 27-year career in the Pennsylvania state corrections system. She retired in 2003 as a program manager supervising various treatment-based departments for a maximum security prison. Blaine earned associate and bachelor’s degrees in business administration from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania, as well as the Certified Program Planner designation through the Learning Resources Network. She is currently completing a master’s degree in Education Management through Strayer University. Blaine was named VGCC’s Staff Member of the Year for 2010 .
