VGCC Names 2 Franklin County Women For State Academic Excellence Awards

Susan Marshall and Michelle Reagan have a lot in common.

They are both Vance-Granville Community College students. Both have children and have returned to school to prepare for new careers.

Both women live in Franklin County – Susan Marshall in Franklinton and Michelle Reagan in Youngsville.

They are both outstanding students. Marshall has a 3.96 grade-point average (of a possible 4.0) in the Early Childhood Associate/Teacher Associate program. Reagan has a 3.75 GPA in the College Transfer (Associate in Arts) program.

Now, they share another bond. They have been selected by the college to receive North Carolina Community College System Academic Excellence Awards. Marshall and Reagan will be honored along with two selectees from each of the other 57 schools in the system at an Academic Excellence Awards Luncheon on April 27 in Raleigh.

In addition to their academic records, the extra-curricular school and community activities are considered in the selection of students for the award.

Marshall is a member of the Student North Carolina Association of Educators at Vance-Granville, and she serves as parliamentarian for the group. She is also parliamentarian for the VGCC Student Government Association. For several years, she was secretary of Rolling Thunder Inc., Chapter NC 4, which is a POW/MIA awareness organization that lobbies for veterans’ rights.

Marshall was working full-time at retail when she began school at Vance-Granville. After being injured at work and having knee surgeries, she changed her career plans. After earning her Associate in Applied Science degree, she plans to work in the schools as a teacher assistant and “further enrich the lives of children,” she said.

Marshall has a daughter, Laura, who is also a VGCC student, and a son, Benjamin, who lives in New Jersey.

Reagan is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the academic honor society of two-year colleges, is a Dean’s List student and tutors other students in math. She has been a recipient of merit scholarships the past two school years.

The mother of two children, Josh, 11, and Dustin, 4, Reagan also keeps books for the company of her husband, Walter, and her mother-in-law’s cleaning company. When she has time, she volunteers at her son’s elementary school.

Reagan plans to continue her education at a four-year college, get her degree and teach middle school math.

Vance-Granville Community College President Randy Parker said of this year’s Academic Excellence Award students: “They are typical of so many students at the college. They juggle their studies with their responsibilities as parents and with jobs, and they still find time to excel at their studies and to contribute to their communities. We are extremely proud of Susan Marshall and Michelle Reagan.”
