VGCC Medical Coding program comes to South Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will make the Medical Coding certificate program available at its South Campus in Granville County. Medical Coding is a thirteen-month Community and Economic Development program that is also offered on other VGCC campuses. It includes training in coding, billing, insurance, medical terminology, and preparing for a certification test. Starting in February, an evening class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the South Campus, located on N.C. 56 between Creedmoor and Butner. The course will also be offered online. Students in either the evening class or the online class must attend registration and orientation at South Campus on Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. Students will be given a complete program overview and instructions during the orientation and registration process. Medical coding is the process of taking written medical records and converting them into a numerical language in order to submit a bill for services or supplies to an insurance company for payment. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “The medical coding field is expected to grow much faster than the average occupation through the next decade.” VGCC’s program provides area residents with the necessary skills and understanding to allow them to seek entry-level coding positions in one of the nation’s fastest-growing occupations. Students must have a high school diploma or GED to enter the program. For more information and to register, call Jason Snelling, assistant director of South Campus, at (919) 528-4737, ext 3515, or Laura Peace at (252) 738-3417.
