VGCC Medical Assistants Club Elects Officers For 1999-2000

The VGCC Student Association of Medical Assistants held its first meeting of the 1999-2000 academic year on Thursday, Sept. 2. New officers were elected: Yolanda Morris-Payne will serve the club as president, Saemica Person as vice president, Karen Bush as secretary, Terrie Evans as treasurer and Angie Goswick as historian.

Student Government Association representatives for the SAMA club are Morris-Payne, Goswick and Evans.

The mission of the SAMA club is to support the Medical Assisting profession in the community. The VGCC SAMA club actively supports health and medical activities throughout our area.

During the meeting the club discussed fund-raisers for the year. Plans are to host a hot dog sale at the Franklin County Campus in October. Proceeds from the sale will be used to adopt a family during the holidays and provide meals and Christmas gifts.

The club is currently collecting food and toiletry items for Floyd flood victims. SAMA has also placed containers around FCC to collect spare change, which will be donated at the end of the year to The American Cancer Society during the Relay For Life walk. SAMA plans to enter a team in the Relay For Life event again this year.

Advisors for the SAMA club are Glenn Grady and Tammy Care, Medical Assisting instructors. Grady is also vice president of the North Carolina Society of Medical Assistants and serves as the organization’s membership committee chairman.

“North Carolina currently has the largest membership in the Society of Medical Assistants among the 50 states,” said Grady. “The VGCC SAMA club, though barely a year old, has already accomplished a number of services for our community and school and plans to continue in that vein this year,” he added.

National Medical Assistants Week is Oct. 18-22. The theme is: “Medical Assistants — At The Heart Of Health Care.”
