VGCC launches enhanced Library web site

The Learning Resources Center (LRC) at Vance-Granville Community College recently unveiled a completely re-designed web site — lrc.vgcc.edu — that helps users to fully benefit from all of the college library’s resources and services. LRC director Dave Trudeau said that he is confident that the result of the upgrades will be “one of the finest academic library web sites in the state.”

Using software called LibGuides, Trudeau and his staff have created a dynamic site that can be regularly modified and expanded to meet the ever-changing information needs of VGCC students, faculty, staff and members of the local community. Students particularly will benefit from changes that make it easier to do research and find the various resources they need to complete class assignments. Among the new features of the web site are dynamic search engines and enhanced access to dozens of world-class databases and other electronic resources , including an expanding eBook collection. Recent additions give students and faculty access to two outstanding health science-focused e-Resources, Anatomy.TV and the STAT!REF database. LRC patrons also now have 24/7 live access to librarians (on-site or statewide) via the virtual reference service NCknows.

The LRC provides access not only to a wide variety of books but also to audio-visual materials and hundreds of various magazines, academic journals and newspapers. The library’s DVD collection includes not only educational videos but also every available Academy Award winning Best Picture film since 1970, and is currently adding dozens of films selected from the American Film Institute’s (AFI) list of the 100 greatest American films of all time. In addition, the LRC serves as a location for computer workstations, where students may participate in their online classes or use any number of services such as the Job & Career Accelerator, which provides online job-searching tools through a grant provided by the State Library of North Carolina to NC LIVE , an organization of which VGCC’s library is a partner.

The main LRC is located in Building 2 on the college’s main campus in Vance County, but library services are also available to students taking classes at the other campuses ( South Campus in Granville County, Warren County Campus and Franklin County Campus ) and online. The LRC is also open to the public, supporting life-long learning and intellectual enrichment for the community. For more information, visit the new web site  or visit any of the library locations to sign up for a library account and to learn more about the LRC’s on-site and virtual resources and services.
