VGCC Introduces Beginning Italian Course

“Italian for Beginners,” a ten-week course, will be offered by Vance-Granville Community College for the first time this fall.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays, September 12 – November 21, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Building 7 on the main campus in Vance County.

Whether a student needs practical language for a trip to Italy or just wants a fun learning experience, instructor Giulia Vitale of Warrenton thinks that anyone can benefit from the class.  She said that this course will “enrich students’ understanding of how the Italian language and culture affects our everyday lives, from music to food.”  Vitale, who has taught this same course elsewhere, will focus more on conversation and useful phrases than on rules of grammar.  She promised a “relaxed, comfortable family atmosphere” and noted that the class can be a fun activity for a couple or family.

A native of Great Britain, Vitale lived in Italy for more than a decade.  She said that her background gives her a combination of experience with Italian language and culture from the perspective both of an insider and that of an outsider.  Vitale holds a Master’s degree in Italian Studies from the University of California at Berkeley.

The cost of the course is $37.50.  No textbook is required, but students are invited to bring any related text that they already own.
