VGCC Instructors’ Work Chosen For Year-Long Exhibit In Raleigh

A copper wire sculpture and a quilted wall hanging by two Continuing Education instructors at Vance-Granville Community College have been selected for exhibit for a year in the Caswell Building in Raleigh.

President H. Martin Lancaster of the North Carolina Community College System chose “Dancing Maiden,” a copper wire sculpture by Lelia Brigham of Henderson and “Stained Glass Star,” a hand-quilted wall hanging by Peggy Stocks of Manson to be shown in the system headquarters building throughout 2001.

This is the 4th Annual Community College Art Exhibit. When the system moved into the Caswell Building in 1997, it was bare of decoration, and Lancaster decided to utilize the talents of instructors, students and staff of the 59 schools within the Community College System to brighten the halls, offices and meeting rooms. Lancaster personally chooses the items submitted, and they remain in the Caswell Building for one year.

This is the second time that work by Stocks has been chosen for exhibit. One of her quilts was in the first art display in 1998. She has been teaching personal enrichment quilting classes at Vance-Granville for several years, and currently has three classes each week.

Brigham is a highly trained artist whose work is well known throughout the state and Southeast. She has won numerous awards in art and photography and has had many one-person shows across the Southeast. Many of her works hang in private and corporate collections around the world. She helped initiate the annual Kerr Lake Spring and Autumn Arts shows and the N.C. Nature Art Association Annual Art Show.

Brigham, who works in almost every art medium, has taught painting classes at Vance-Granville for many years.

A reception will be held in the Caswell Building on March 15 to officially open the 2001 Community College Art Exhibit and to honor the artists.
