VGCC Instructor invites Public to Learn about Assertiveness and Dreams

Peter Metzner, a Psychology instructor at Vance-Granville Community College, will offer two free seminars in October, both of which are open to the public, in addition to VGCC students, faculty and staff. The seminars seek to help individuals improve their interpersonal relationships and their own well-being.

First, Metzner will present “Assertiveness Training” on Monday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. “Research clearly shows that the more skilled people are at building effective relationships with others, the more successful and productive they will be,” Metzner said. This seminar uses a proven approach to teaching critical skills necessary for productive relationships, including listening skills, assertion skills, finding agreement and resolving differences with others.

Later, Metzner will present “The Way of our Dreams” on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. and Thursday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. He will examine questions like “What do dreams tell us?” and “Why should we pay attention to our dreams?” He will consider some real examples of dreams in an interactive discussion. According to Metzner, leading researchers believe that all dreams, even nightmares, are useful in promoting the dreamer’s health and wholeness. “The psychologist Carl Jung said that ‘In our sleep, we awaken to who we really are’,” Metzner noted. “Dreams reveal areas of our lives that need attention, showing us where adaptation and growth need to take place. Much like the reins of a horse, they correct us when we go off track.”

All seminars are scheduled to be held in Room 6104 (Building 6) on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County.

Peter Metzner, MA, MPA, CLC, has taught Psychology at VGCC since 2002. He has researched and studied dreams with the Journey through Wholeness, Triangle Jung Society, Robert Johnson, Barry Williams, Jeremy Taylor, John Ryan Haule and others. He has written articles on leadership and dream work and has given keynote presentations and workshops on dreams to organizations such as the National Wellness Institute, Center for Creative Leadership, and the North Carolina Association of Business Coaches. Metzner has also facilitated classes on dreams for the Institute for Life Coach Training.
